PPC Songbird 1.0pre for MacOS X 10.5
in End-user Application Software
So The Apple Blog takes a first look at Songbird 1.0RC1 for MacOS X on Intel. In the write-up, it is mentioned that there is no PPC version available.
Haven't talked here about much else lately, so regular readers will know the Songbird project dropped official support for the PPC platform prior to the 0.7 release. For reasons that don't seem exactly clear, I've earned a Songbird t-shirt for "wasting my time" doing unofficial builds, so I could see what all of the excitement is about.
It's been about a month and a half since my last post of a Songbird PPC build. Lots of work has been done on the app including a new icon. In preparation for the 1.0 release, I've been updating the builds of all of the Songbird dependencies and modifying build scripts to incorporate processor specific compiler optimisations. This isn't a universal build and you've got a PPC, so you'll want your media app to take advantage of things like altivec.
This release on my part is not official, nor is it from an svn 1.0RC1 tag, so it's something of a nightly from the general frame of the 1.0RC1 tag. It should work on either a G4 or G5 and with OS X 10.5. Sorry, but for the near future the possibility of a pure 10.4 capable build is not in the works. If someone wanted to donate a functioning Sawtooth motherboard, I'd have the old Mac up and available in 10.4 to play around with making that happen.
UPDATE: 1 December 2008 6:15pm
I've uploaded newer versions of the following files built on 26 November 2008. No svn checkins since.
Songbird_1.1.0pre-0_macosx-ppc.dmg
md5 checksum for Songbird 1.0pre dmg
I've removed the simul-built extensions as they have been updated and I haven't created a zip file of the latest plugins. END UPDATE
UPDATE 7 December 2008 9:10am HKT
Go check out the initial PPC build of the Songbird 1.0 code.
