Daai Cheung Gam - The Jewel In The Palace

Okay, it's average TV draw last week was 40. And it pulled 42 last Thursday and Friday. Daai Cheung Gam fever has officially enveloped Hong Kong.

It's actually a Korean soap opera from a couple of years ago that TVB has dubbed in to Cantonese, subtitled with Chinese and provided a Kelly Chen theme song. (The Korean is all available on nicam audio channel b). The story is of the woman that became the first woman doctor to work in the Korean palace. Lots of palace intrigue and romance and the usual things that make soap operas like Dallas or Dynasty work, but it also throws in a lot of Korean cooking and traditional medicine to give it a Food Network or Discovery Channel feel. Expect a fair number of the actors and actresses to make public appearances in Hong Kong in the next few weeks.

UPDATE: The 40 represents 2.62 million viewers in Hong Kong or a little over a third of all men, women, and children in the SAR, and somewhere around 90% of the TV viewers in Hong Kong.

    daveOh that's been the focus of office gossip for a few weeks. Even my parents got into it when they were here, and they speak neither Cantonese nor Korean.

    Heh, the missus got her hands on the complete DVD of the whole thing: 18 DVDs, four episodes each. I think she's trying to watch them all as soon as possible.

    Unfortunately, there's no English dub or subtitles on the DVD.

    Tom - Daai Tou LaamSounds like you need a patient interperter to share the couch while watching the episodes to explain the portions where dialogue is actually important.

    And we scouted the VCDs this last weekend. 7 boxed sets with 10 episodes each. HK$200 per boxed set. and lots of time to sit and watch all 70 episodes.

    chrisI was quite enjoying dcg myself until recently. Our NICAM on TVB has mysteriously dropped out. As a linguistically challenged expat, I find my korean is better than my canto so now with no NICAM, i'm bu***red as there are no subtitles in english! has this happenned to anyone else? NICAM droput i mean..

    Tom - Daai Tou LaamHaven't had the NICAM drop out here recently. It's kind of strange but my wife prefers to listen to the Korean and just read the Chinese subtitles (and then she translates where the dialogue is important.) I guess the dubbing gets to be distracting, like in Hong Kong films badly dubbed in to English.

    What's really odd is that we tend to turn up the volume when we can't hear the Korean, even though neither of us actually understands it.

    daveWe got the DVD set in Lo Wu Commercial City. HKD $130 for 18 DVDs.

    Mind you, the Cantonese dubbing is awful - they seem to have picked the screechiest, most irritating voice actors. Cheung Gaam as a child has the kind of voice which would invite infanticide.

    The mandarin dubbing is ok, though.

    I'm not sure about the Korean version of the theme song.

    The instrumental which both versions share is widely available as a ringtone.

    Winghi, i was wondering whether anyone thinks the dubbing after episode 49 is wierd, well basically changed with just a male and female speaking as everyone. Very frustrating as the dubbing is very off putting, so please let me know :) thanks

    Wingyeh dubbing in cantonese. Whenever someone speaks, the music also stops, which is just so annoying. I've been looking around and most of the sets have over 10 DVD's and the cantonese one was published by Panorama, which this one only came with nine DVDs and the publisher is 枝洽出品. Is this a fake?

    Emilyyea i kno their names cheung gam is Lee young ae Mun dai ho is Ji jin hee, cheung gam's rival is Hong rina , cheung games teacher is Yang Mi-Kyeong, and Gam Yings teacher (mean one) is Kyeon Miri (she's actually really pretty if u look at her true look :D yea thats da main characters rite? if not then tell me steph :D

    Kenny LeongDai Cheung Gum is really a great series. Actually, a fantastic series. Very good camera work, excellent scenes and scenery, and the actors and actresses are REAL actors and actresses that not only know what they're doing, but they really play their character well. Unlike a lot of modern actors and actresses in Hong Kong that have really hardly any proper acting skills at all. Anyhow, Dai Cheung Gum is a top series.

    One thing I noticed about the Dai Cheung Gum theme song sung by Kelly Chen. At the beginning of the song when she starts to sing, the first segment of NOTES of the melody (ie when she says "horn foong etc") doesn't seem to match the second segment of NOTES of the melody (ie when she says "horn yut etc). The first segment of notes by themselves sound just fine by itself. And the second segment of notes by themselves sound fine too. But putting the two segments together in succession doesn't sound right. It's like apples and oranges. I think it's because Kelly is not using the notes that the composer of the music actually used, so that's why the 'beginning' parts of the cantonese song of Dai Cheung Gum sounds a bit wrong (in terms of the tune/melody). So I believe it's a misinterpretation or mis-use of notes. Whether Kelly and company knew that is another matter.

    Dai Cheung Gum's colleague ... when she was learning to be a doctor. Her colleague looks like a young version of Joey Wang, the one from Chinese Ghost Story.

    KennyBut come to think of it, even the real composer of the dai cheung gum music might have messed up in the first few of segments of the dai cheung gum tune. After listening to how the original notes in the first 3 segments progress a few times, I find that the note patterns actually don't seem to fit together properly. I believe that the composer used brute force to get those patterns to come together like that. The overall tune still sounds catchy and nice though.

    SnowieDae Jang Geum rox this world!!! My whole family,especially my aunt, are crazy 'bout this show. We finished the whole show on Christmas and had 2 watch till 2! I no how 2 play the theme song on my piano and memeriozed the Korean song after I sang it 3 times.O na ra o na a ju o na...My aunt loves Lady Han! I went 2 Dae Jang Guem 2 eat!     SnowieI just love how the casts act and the cooking parts. I want 2 be the person who always steals food and is a friend of Jang Geum.(Forgot her name!)The bad guys aren't too bad cause they're sort of just jealous and Lady Choi use 2 be friends with Lady Han and Jang Geum's mother's friend. I'm so sad Dae Jang Geum is over! I love watching their mistakes on the internet like when Lady Han was so cold that her nose was running during an act and once she fell asleep.HeHe...u should watch it!!!I love the cooking contest between Lady Choi and Lady Han. U no that Yang Mi- Kyeong was suppose to be Lady Choi and Kyeon Miri was suppose to be Lady Han.     AngelikaI was never a fan of asianovelas so when my friend first ask me to watch jewel in the palace series, i refused. She kept on persuading me so i give it a try. After watching few episodes, i got addicted to it that i bought the complete DVD set of it. My family and I started watching last Jan. 1 and we finished it on Jan. 4. We were so addicted to it that we would start watching at noon and stop at about 3 in the morning. We even ate our lunch and supper in front of the TV. The whole story is very interesting. there were no dull moments in the series. At the end of each episodes i was so excited to find out what's going to happen next. i really like the Love story of Jang geum and Min joho. Even though they are not vocal about it, it can be seen through their actions. And love traingle was really amazing..
    Now that I'm finished watching it. I just can't get it off my mind.

    Funny thing is I who doesn't like to watched asianovelas have already finished Jewel but my friend who pursued me to watch this is still in the middle of the show!!

    rhaihello everyone! i'm rhai from philippines.. jewel in the palace already came out here in philippines only last november 2005.. it was sad because we're too late for the info's and other stuff... but still i'm so happy that now i'm able to watch it and still watching it.. i really love to go in korea especially to the places where jewel in the palace shooted... i really love that drama, everything about it.. most especially Ms. Lee Young-ae and Ms. Yang Mi-kyung.. if there's anybody who has their special site please and kindly mail me here rhai29@yahoo.com Thanks everyone!     chadAT first i dont watch jewel in the palace but cuz i think its just an ordinary tele novelas but it was changed when i saw jang geum together with lady han cooking for a compition to be a punong tagapamahala and it made me amaze coz its defferint from that moment i watch it every and that makes me crazy jewel is not an ordinary story its all about values, tradition, preservation of culture and of course the evil in the society is illustrated and that jewel in the palace hit in the philippines and of the world.

    gini'm really obsessed with Jewel in the Palace. I would say that this soap opera is the best among all the Korean novelas that i have watched so far. It has moral lessons and some humor too.

    I really like the episode when Jang-geum lost her sense of taste; especially the scene when Lady Han wathes her while she is crying and so desperate to have her taste back. That one is a real tear-jerker!

    Nanu NanuMuahaha, it is showing in Singapore "The Great Jang Geum" dubbed in Mandarin. Best of the best. I got the Cantonese DVD version but the English subtitles from disk 8 to 14 sucks badly. They did not get a translator to translate it instead they use a dictionary to do it. Missus cry over it. So touching. Cheers Mate!

    LDThis is a good soap opera: the music if fine, too. The heroine suffers a lot of tragedy, but I am glad that she finds happiness in the end - and, in the meantime, made her mark on all of Korea as the first woman physician of that land.
