So yesterday I decided to browse FreeRepublic. Some of the items for discussion, such as Stacey Campfield, were filled with the expected commentary that leaves them brushing shoulders with white supremacists so often on the issues of race and immigration. I saw an interesting post on the use of eminent domain to take property for building a new baseball park in Washington, DC. So I decided to register and respond.
Kelo may be an atrocious precedent for the United States, but it is not wise to toss in the name George W. Bush when discussing baseball teams building stadiums using the power of eminent domain.
Anyone that's lurked around opposition research on GWB knows the liberals will hit this one out of the ballpark. The Texas Rangers used eminent domain to build the Ballpark in Arlington while George W. Bush was an owner of the Rangers, along with J. Thomas Schieffer, the current Ambassador to Japan and brother to CBS News anchorman Bob Schieffer.
The response I got wasn't quite what I expected:
So we can't ever criticize something Bush has done? I haven't researched the matter personally, but if what you say is true, then Bush was just as wrong as the owners of the Nationals.
I reject this idea that we have to protect President Bush from controversy. If he screws up, he needs to be held accountable just like anybody else.
If only the Freepers were more willing to hold President Bush accountable for his screw ups, they might have the reputation as one of the most partisan and unthinking boards on the internet.
