Today, Radar Online provides a copy of the court affidavit to provide probable cause for the search warrant against Castagana. It seems he was tracked down by a postal money order used as a campaign contribution to Katherine "fake boobs" Harris campaign for the US Senate. Also you find the charges to be violations of Title 18, United States Code, Sections 1038(a){1} (False Information and Hoaxes) and 844 (e) (Sending threats via the U.S. Mail). There are no charges towards domestic terrorism documented in the affidavit, even though many of the letters were passed on to authorities protecting the US from WMDs.

The FBI was looking for diaries, mailers, surgical gloves, an assortment of other items including Katherine Harris devotional objects, a bunch of other stuff, and, oddly, ‘left wing hate rhetoric.’

Left wing hate rhetoric and anti-Semitic writings. odd combination given Chad's letters often mentioned a Jewish talk radio host murdered by right wing extremists. Of course it is this anti-Jewish streak in Chad, that had him banned (or "zotted") by the admins at Freeperville this past January, while using the Costigan pseudonym.

Here's the post where Costigan gets "zotted" for using an anti-Semitic nickname for New York City. Some suggested Chad was a troll from Democratic Underground in that thread, but more sensible folks pegged him as a refugee from Stormfront. (For those not familiar with Stormfront, it's a neo-nazi/white supremacist forum and fluff material for the Fox Carolina television station.

Chad promptly re-registered at FreeRepublic and was an active member for another 10 months, while avoiding the anti-semitism that had him banned. Instead of "Jew York City", he now proclaimed it to be "Nuke York City". Seeing NYC nuked by terrorists is apparently fine in Freeperville, as long as you don't claim it's going to be nuked because of its Jewish population. So if you want to avoid having your freeper account frozen, just suggest you hope NYC is nuked because of the gays or liberals or Democrats or blacks or Muslims or Hispanics instead. After all, Freeperville has a mainstream Republican image to maintain.
